Monica Kuhlman Jacobson

My work explores the fragile anatomy of memory, capturing fleeting spaces between what
remains and what has faded. Guided by the natural world, I seek to evoke emotion and
connection, finding beauty and spirituality within the ephemeral and the gritty.

I suppose I’m influenced by the 20th-century pictorialists, whose post-capture manipulation of
images through elaborate, labor-intensive darkroom processes emphasized the photographer’s
hand and the deeply personal nature of the photographic print. Inspired by this tradition, I
approach photography as both an act of observation and an intimate process of making.

Sea and Sand is a collection of black-and-white and color photographs that explore isolated
textures, forms, and fragments of light. Together, the images evoke a universal sense of
nostalgia. Each photograph becomes a quiet monument to a solitary moment—a deeply
personal echo of the past discovered within the present.

Raised in a Northern California coastal town, my aesthetic is deeply informed by the region’s
characteristic fog, cool light, and salt-laden mist. These atmospheric landscapes provide both a
visual language and a place of personal solace. My photographs inhabit the space between
presence and absence, inviting viewers to slow down and recognize the emotional resonance
within seemingly ordinary places.

Rooted in personal history, my work gives voice to nature and to places that often exist primarily
in memory. Photography becomes a bridge between landscape and experience, creating a
connection between the places we inhabit and the people who move through them. My practice
is not merely aesthetic; it is grounded in sentiment, memory, and narrative. Each image offers
layers of meaning that unfold beyond the initial visual encounter.

To heighten the tactile and nostalgic qualities of my photographs, I use archival inks on 100%
cotton rag paper, allowing the texture of the paper to become an integral part of the work. For
me, photography is a search for sanctuary—a way to find calm and beauty while giving voice to
nature and to places that might otherwise be lost to memory.

My artistic practice is deeply intertwined with my commitment to art education. I hold a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MSEd from Dominican University. As an
educator, I have spent more than 25 years fostering creativity and encouraging others to find
their own means of artistic expression. My work has been exhibited nationally and featured in
publications including the Chicago Tribune and a University of Ohio Museum catalogue. My
photographs are held in private collections in the United States and Europe.
