Anne Travis

Artist Statement

My photography examines form, structure, and light across natural and built environments. I am drawn to images that emerge through careful observation, where line, texture, and tonal relationships define the visual experience.
While I continue to work in color to capture the energy of wildlife and travel, monochrome photography is central to my practice. Working in shades of gray allows me to concentrate on geometry, surface, and spatial tension, using tonal range and gradation to shape each image. This framework provides a space to explore abstraction, scale, and contrast, revealing patterns and details that might otherwise go unnoticed — from the graphic lines of architectural design and the narrative power of photojournalism, to the fragile, intricate architecture of spiderwebs.
My background in wildlife photography established an approach grounded in patience and attentiveness. More recently, my architectural, abstract, and macro work has expanded that foundation, offering new ways to investigate perspective and narrative. Rather than aligning with a single genre, my practice remains fluid, connected by my love of strong graphic geometry, scene texture, and the interplay of light and shadow.

Bio

Anne Travis is a fine art photographer based in Sonoma, California. She spent her childhood in Los Angeles and later lived in Boston, where she pursued a career in medicine. Photography originally developed alongside her professional life as a creative counterbalance — an avenue driven by a deep love of nature and a fascination with structural geometry, scene texture, and the nuances of light and shadow.
A formative trip to Southern Africa in 2016 shaped her initial focus on wildlife photography, sharpening her sensitivity to light, gesture, and timing. Following her relocation to Northern California in 2023, her creative drive was reawakened. Today, she operates from her studio on Sonoma Mountain, which overlooks the town of Sonoma and the Mayacamas Mountains, a setting that offers an inspiring daily perspective.
As an active member of the Marin Photography Club, Anne regularly engages with a vibrant community of creators, expanding her techniques through regional excursions and stylistic exploration. Her portfolio at annetravisphotography.com showcases an artist whose work has broadened to encompass architectural, travel, photojournalistic, abstract, and macro photography.
Anne regularly submits her work to juried photography competitions and exhibitions across a wide range of themes. Her practice continues to evolve, shaped by both the discipline of observation and an enduring curiosity about how photography can transform everyday and extraordinary subjects alike.Contact:
